Why I don’t work alone anymore

Solo doesn’t have to mean going it alone.

Hey Reader,

There’s this myth that when you work for yourself, you should love working alone.

I mean, there’s total freedom. No distractions. No awkward small talk. Sounds like the dream, right?

I used to think so too.

But after years of running my own business, I’ve realised too much freedom can be a trap.

You tell yourself you’ll start soon. Then it’s midday and you’re still circling your to-do list.

The thing that’s helped me most? Body doubling. Working alongside someone else (virtually or in person) without having to chat or collaborate. It’s one of the reasons Cool Wow’s coworking exists.

We’ve just launched a new content series digging into the science behind why this works, not just for ADHD brains, but for anyone who struggles to start, stick with or finish tasks.

If you’ve ever thought “I should be able to focus” or “I just need to try harder”, I reckon you’ll want to read this one.

Read the first blog here, or check out the first two posts over on our Instagram.

We’ll be sharing more over the next couple of weeks, including a poll we’d love you to weigh in on too. Keep an eye out.

And of course, if you’ve already felt the power of body doubling through coworking (with us or in another way), I’d love to hear your take. Hit reply and tell me your biggest takeaway.

P.S. Expressions of interest to take over Cool Wow close this Friday. If you’ve been thinking “I could totally run that”, now’s the time. All the details are right here.

MEMBER WINS + FUN things

  • How cool is The Other Rach’s new artwork at the Griffith Base Hospital?! (That’s out here in regional NSW, about 2 hours from Wagga, if you're playing along.) ‘Are We There Yet?’ was co-created with students, clinical staff and community groups, and it includes lots of Griffith bits like roads made of pasta and a bin chicken sculpted from oranges (IYKYK). She got to tour the new hospital a couple of weeks ago, and it officially opens tomorrow.
  • Gab’s novel The Unexpected Mess of it All has been shortlisted for the ACT Literary Awards 2025. Incred!
  • Velvet’s just announced her next Noosa Small Business Series event for 10 July, and it’s a juicy one on AI and building your own AI agents. If you’re nearby, check it out!
  • Very proud of Karly who posted her own stuff to LinkedIn for the first time, celebrating passing the baton after 7 years managing Tumbafest, a much-loved annual festival in the Snowy Mountains.

What we're liking RN

  • LinkedIn. It’s so fricken easy to post when you can just do text and not worry about images or carousels or videos. And you can have fun too, like this post about visitors not giving a flying fig about bin night.
  • This Calm Gentle Mix on Spotify.
  • Fi from Peach Business. She's everything you could ask for in a mentor. Gentle, kind and not afraid to give you a nudge when you need it. Her Business Model Design program is a brilliant starting point if you’re rethinking, rebuilding or just need clarity. It’s self-paced, with a live Q&A in July. I’m actually working through it again myself for Assembld + highly recommend.

We heart Coworking Days

Today’s one of our in-person days here in Wagga (if you’re reading this from in the same room, hi! 👋). I'm sharing some of what we're up to on our IG stories if you want a sticky beak. Our next Coworking Day is locked in for Wednesday 6 August, and tickets go on sale this Friday.

We’re a community of female solo business owners who get the highs, lows, and everything in between. Whether you call yourself a freelancer, consultant, creative entrepreneur, solopreneur, small business owner, specialist or something else, you’re welcome here.

We make solo business ownership a little less lonely and a whole lot more rewarding. Here you can grow your business without the pressure of doing it “the right way”.
